Scope /DP

Rapid Development System*

Overview

The SCOPE development package lets users and developers of audio software and hardware make their dreams come true. The idea of a totally modular, realtime, audio development environment for all kinds of audio applications finally becomes a reality.

SCOPE /DP is a professional development system for DSP-based audio applications. Object-oriented development of both functional audio circuits and graphical user interfaces for instruments, effects processors, metering and measurement tools, etc. is sheer pleasure with SCOPE /DP.

SCOPE /DP provides ultimate flexibility regarding DSP hardware. Usually, the system is based on the SCOPE board, which contains 15 (yes, fifteen!) of the fastest general-purpose floating-point DSPs available, the 32-bit Analog Devices SHARC. A SCOPE board delivers peak performance of 2.7 GFlops - far more powerful than any other audio system in existence.

In the future you can also use alternatively the SCOPE /DP software with our Pulsar II card, which is outfitted with six DSPs.** All CreamWare DSP boards are equipped with S/TDM, a dedicated bus system. Via the S/TDM bus, multiple DSP cards can be linked to form an even more powerful system.

You also have various options regarding inputs and outputs. Audio I/Os are available in analog, S/PDIF, AES/EBU and ADAT formats. Furthermore, MIDI, Wordclock and ADAT 9-pin interfaces are available.

The elegant user interface and unique modular architecture of SCOPE /DP make access to the intrinsic power of the system easy and highly intuitive. Simply arrange and connect the library modules in the workspace to create the desired functionality. Everything - even the computer’s audio drivers and hardware I/Os - are represented as modules in the SCOPE /DP environment. This gives you incredible flexibility - enough to develop audio applications which previously would have been unrealizable, or which would have cost a fortune to prototype within the conventional paradigm. SCOPE /DP makes all of this possible. It’s time to get creative again!

Circuit Design

The secret of SCOPE /DP lies under the hood. CreamWare has invested more than 100 person-years of development time to realize this highly sophisticated, completely open-architecture audio system.

SCOPE /DP is a singularly powerful design environment for all kinds of audio applications. SCOPE /DP’s modularity and extensive libraries open up new worlds of audio possibilities! As a SCOPE /DP developer, you will immediately begin realizing ideas you never before thought were attainable.

In SCOPE /DP, a "device" is the functional equivalent of a virtual hardware unit. A complete device includes both audio circuitry and an associated graphical user interface which provides user-friendly access to device settings and adjustable parameters.

The SCOPE /DP circuit development arsenal includes a broad spectrum - numbering literally in the hundreds - of efficiently coded "atomic" audio building-block modules which you can connect and configure as desired to construct arbitrarily complex audio DSP applications. The selection includes modules for high-quality mixing, effects processing and synthesis, as well as control modules that allow parameter adjustments from the GUI, via MIDI controllers, or under control of other software applications. The development environment permits audio circuits to be viewed and manipulated in both graphical circuit diagram and hierarchical tree structure formats, enabling you to work with maximum efficiency and minimum confusion at all times.

The circuit/graphics design process culminates - if desired - with interconnected module groups and associated custom control surfaces, all incorporated into integrated devices. Examples of this are the full-function software devices - mixers, synthesizers and effects processors - which are included with our highly acclaimed Pulsar DSP system. It should come as no surprise to hear that SCOPE was the development system used to create these devices. Properly packaged, all devices you create with SCOPE /DP can be used in Pulsar.

GUI Design

SCOPE /DP not only offers an extensive module library for audio circuits - the system also provides a complete graphic design package with which you can create ergonomic and stimulating user interfaces.

The graphic design subsystem is a pleasure to use and an invaluable tool which enables you to design studio devices having not only the exact functionality you desire, but also precisely the look and feel you envision for them.

The module library includes a vast selection of smart-looking, ready-to-use faders, rotary pots, buttons, text displays and other functional control elements. Simply drag and drop these onto your surface, connect them with your circuit’s audio modules, and adjust their range settings. You can create a completely operational, attractive looking surface in minutes.

Moreover, you are by no means limited to the look of the modules included in the graphical controller library. SCOPE /DP provides a comprehensive toolkit for realizing your own individual GUI design, including powerful tools for manipulating colors, gradients, textures, transparency and text - to name just a few.

What more could one ask? Reduce your GUI development time to a minimum, and still build the prettiest, most ergonomic user work surfaces imaginable. All within SCOPE /DP. It’s not just that the design process is accelerated - now graphic designers, with no knowledge of software programming, can complete a surface design on their own, without help from programmers. This division of labor can save a lot of time and hassle for everyone. SCOPE’s environment is so easy to use that even sales, support, and applications specialists can modify the software and execute changes for the customer.

SCOPE /DP for Research & Engineering

Researchers and engineers can benefit from the power of SCOPE /DP in many ways. For the first time, you have a system you can use to develop and prototype your algorithms in a modular way, on a realtime platform!

Now, you can quickly design your solution on SCOPE and begin with field testing and debugging, without spending a single dollar on custom hardware. Once the design is firm, you can confidently proceed with a custom hardware implementation. The ability to rapidly prototype your product while involving end users at an early stage of its development represents a new creative process for product engineering. Turnaround times in SCOPE development are as short as they can get.

SCOPE /DP also delivers the infrastructure you require to develop your own custom audio applications. You can test and experiment in a real world application environment without having to carry loads of physical hardware into your facility. For everything from environmental simulation to test and measurement - SCOPE /DP is a great tool to add to your development lab. This aspect alone will save you lots of time and money - significantly increasing your efficiency and your competitive edge.

As a result, DSP developers can concentrate on their own special-purpose algorithms without needing to waste time thinking about the supporting audio infrastructure or otherwise reinventing the wheel. As a developer, you can easily create your own DSP atoms for use within SCOPE /DP - that is, if you don't find what you need in the existing module library. With the additional software DSP SDK, importing your SHARC DSP object code into SCOPE takes only seconds. Once you've done this, your module becomes part of the library and can be deployed immediately in your circuits, using all of the usual SCOPE tools and techniques. Even DSP development becomes a fast, interactive and creative process.

SCOPE /DP also lets you get the "creative" people involved directly in product definition and development, because in-depth knowledge of DSP programming is not necessary to start realizing great ideas on SCOPE - as we ourselves have experienced. Many of the synthesizer applications shipping with Pulsar were in fact designed and developed by applications experts with little or no experience in DSP implementation. SCOPE made it possible for them to get creative, so that they could experiment and develop their ideas directly, thereby making valuable contributions to product design and development. This simply doesn’t happen with conventional development tools. SCOPE /DP brings cooperation between engineers and applications specialists to a new level of productivity!

In SCOPE, a successful simulation equals a finished product that performs just like hardware. Do you provide custom audio solutions? Do you develop custom hardware to accommodate these solutions? If so, SCOPE may be the ideal OEM platform for you. CreamWare offers very attractive OEM pricing on SCOPE hardware, making SCOPE often a more economical solution than custom hardware. And unlike pure hardware solutions, you can periodically offer your customers upgrade options to enhance the value of their original investment.

If your product does not require the processing power of a SCOPE board, you can offer your OEM customer the downscaled Pulsar II hardware variant (6 SHARC DSPs, 20-24 I/Os per unit) at a fabulous price point.

Concerned about protecting your intellectual property? CreamWare has implemented extremely secure encryption and copy protection mechanisms. Software piracy - normally a big concern when publishing for other platforms - is simply not an issue with SCOPE. And you have complete control over the licensing agreements you supply with your software. Our copy protection is implemented in our hardware, and is much more secure than the typical "dongle" solutions.

The basic SCOPE development package includes all tools required to develop signal processing devices and their associated GUIs. An enhanced SDK version of SCOPE adds scripting capabilities to the system. Scripting enables you to develop custom menus, interfaces, controls and other elements using a Java-like language that executes very quickly and is easy to learn for anyone who is familiar with Java or C++.

Creating cutting-edge audio applications has never before been so fast and efficient. Professional developers will find SCOPE /DP an incredible tool which they’ll wonder how they ever got along without.

SCOPE /DP for Audio Test and Measurement

SCOPE is a precision instrument useful for numerous audio test and measurement purposes. Unlike conventional equipment, a SCOPE system can easily be configured to perform custom tasks. This makes SCOPE a valuable tool to perform measurement and test functions that exactly fit the task at hand.

With its large number of possible I/O channels, SCOPE is a natural for controlling and configuring your test lab. From signal generation (or playback) and environmental signal control, to analysis - configuring a custom SCOPE /DP circuit is accomplished with a few simple mouse operations.

Modules can be interconnected freely within the system. For example, you can route audio from "physical input" modules to mixer modules; via "driver modules" to other Windows software; or to analysis modules - while simultaneously generating test signals and routing them to the desired outputs. This kind of power will save you a great deal of time, improve results, and fuel your creativity. Does this require an in-depth knowledge of the system? No. Thanks to its intuitive, uniquely modular building block approach, SCOPE /DP is easy to learn, and efficient to use.

Engineers can go even further: by employing SCOPE’s flexibility in custom application design, you can even build your own virtual measurement equipment. The SCOPE /DP library contains not only finished applications, but also atomic and macro analysis modules to use in your own circuitry. This enables you to build highly specialized, custom applications to speed up or automate measurement tasks.

You can even interface SCOPE /DP with your own Windows software, opening up a whole new level of development possibilities. This makes SCOPE /DP the ideal system for use in quality control installations. As in other applications, it can substitute for equipment costing much more than the price of a SCOPE system.

SCOPE /DP includes prefabricated devices for performing multi-band analysis, FFT analysis, THD+N and frequency response measurement, level measurement and precision signal generation. Thanks to the system's power and modularity, multiple test functions can be run independently on several channels simultaneously.

THD+N
This device combines an easy to use, high precision test signal generator with "total harmonic distortion plus noise" analysis. It features user programmable test procedures using up to 30 test frequencies (20Hz to 20kHz) allowing fully automated testing of audio equipment. The measurement accuracy is sufficient for 16-bit resolution and above, depending on the specific AD/DA converter used to digitize the signal.

FFT Analyzer
The FFT analyzer provides very high resolution graphic spectral analysis, in either linear or logarithmic frequency scales, on its realtime scope display. Options include a wide choice of frequency bands, resolutions, and FFT windowing functions. It is ideal for any purpose related to detailed sound spectrum analysis.

Signal Generator / Frequency Response
As with THD+N analysis, the frequency response analyzer is combined with a signal generator, and offers test automation. The signal generator produces high precision sine wave, frequency sweeps, white and pink noise, and is ideal for applications such as the testing of audio components, evaluation and calibration of audio systems, or even the tuning of musical instruments.

Multiband Analyzer
This precision 32 band analyzer looks and feels like a sophisticated hardware unit. There are many adjustable parameters, such as filter frequencies and peak axis range.

Synthesis
