C-LAN and CUTMaster

CUTmaster Linear Audio Network

CLAN is the digital, networked solution for almost every daily broadcast production service. CLAN is fully scalable. Either you can use CLAN effectively as a complete solution for smaller radio facilities or implement CLAN modules into existing radio automation systems via the integrated software interfaces.

This modular approach makes possible the development of a large, sophisticated network in small, definable steps. The system can evolve through several phases of development - according to your budget.

CLAN is an open system. Read and write various linear & reduced audio formats - in real time - your answer to the Babel-like conditions in today's format jungle. Supported formats: *.cut, *.wav, *.mus, *.snd, *.mp2, *.mpg, *.aif, *.afc, *.dcs, *.au.

Components

CutMaster Hardware
Cutmaster Interface

As the audio I/O CLAN uses the CUTmaster Board - developed and manufactured by CreamWare. The board features analog and digital interfaces (analog, optical, coaxial, and AES/EBU), adjustable inputs and outputs, and DAT-quality AD and DA converters to guarantee connectivity to your existing equipment.

CUTbase manages the incoming and outgoing audio data as well as all the other information necessary to integrate the various CLAN components. From inclusive system-wide inquiries, previewing of all recorded or acquired audio, playlist logging and databasing of licensed material, interfaces for external archiving to integrated tools for optimization - CUTbase has all the functions required to manage a networked installation.

With CUTmaster you can quickly edit voice and music material with bit accuracy, use crossfades and parametric filters to clean up the existing O-sound - plus, read and write various linear & reduced audio formats. CUTmaster supports you with integrated pulldown-menus - you won't be spending more time learning technique than getting work done. The answer you need is always only one mouse click away.

For more extensive productions, such as jingles or radio play production, use the exciting professional Realtime Tools of the CUTmaster Pro.

The superior audio processing of the CUTmaster Pro's Expander, Compressor, Limiter, Noise-Gate, De-Esser and Delay Processor make complete production on desktop a reality.

CUTmaster Pro also features measurement and analysis modules - a Correlation meter, and a fully scalable, zoomable Spectrum Analyzer. Additionally you will find software plug-ins for declicking & denoising, FFT Analysis and much more.

If your jingle, audio clip, or voice-over is too long or too short - simply adjust it to the desired length with the integrated Time-Stretching tool.

With a CD-Writer you can burn an audio CD directly from within CUTmaster without having to exit to an external application. Create your CD either track-by-track (TAO) or all in one session (DAO) with full international Redbook Standard support. Excellent audio quality, plus all the additional coding and information required to create a Master disc.

Touch-up your archival or other substandard audio material now stored on reel-to-reel tape, records, transcriptions or cassettes. With the osiris Restoration Package you can restore sonically degraded recordings in real time, and burn a CD immediately afterwards! Old favourites can be aired again, with renewed life - enriching any program. And, like all audio processing in the CLAN, with extraordinary quality - as if it had been recorded yesterday.

Want to take your studio on the road? The answer is EasyCUT - for your notebook! In darkest Africa, Good Old Europe, or just on the OB-Van - EasyCUT keeps you going! Connect ToGo to a database module. Since it outputs also linear and various reduced audio formats, you are able to transmit directly to your broadcast station via ISDN or Modem. Using EasyCUT, the broadcast world is wide open - for a very attractive price - no matter where you are.

For a monitoring-only workstation, CUTplayer is the perfect tool. Listen to the first or last few seconds (or any part you like) of any audio clip from local station or the audio server. Set markers while playing, check the total duration, the playing or remaining time - CUTplayer is ideal for auditioning your audio library. If you don’t like moving with mouse, you can use the CUTplayer also with total keyboard-control or even connect to a foot pedal. And, of course, all current audio formats are supported in real time…

With masterCART you can edit playlists, audition and load jingles, trailers or ID’s into the integrated CARTwall. Fades and crossfades are possible by using up to three stereo output channels. Connect the output channels to your mixing desk for live broadcasting - the mixing desk remains in control.

Finally, the longtime recorder Event completes the picture. You can choose between permanent or level-controlled recording modes (in which case the recording will consist of user-controlled discrete events). You can add either standard or additional comments and even set markers during recording. Great for sports events, political conventions, or elections.

Future plans for the product line include a telephone answering system, time controlled recording and parallel processing of up to 4 mono channels at the same time - complete with additional recording management features.

Operating areas

There is a broad range of application schemes possible with CLAN. Individual components are modular, and can therefore be used to address the specific requirements of a particular application area within a broadcast facility.

The Foreign Correspondent
With a docking station and an integrated notebook computer in an overseas office, you have a fully operational remote studio as well as an ‘on location’ mobile system.

Edit reports for breaking news events on location with EasyCUT and the CUTbase Client. Transmit the audio immediately via ISDN or Software Codec to the overseas office, or, for very important events, even directly to the home broadcasting station

With EasyCUT the correspondent’s workstation is no longer limited to a location in the overseas office - it’s wherever the action is.

The Server
Installing CUTbase Server makes all audio files and all additional information immediately available to connected clients - ready to be accessed and processed.

CUTbase Guardian optimizes your environment, compresses databases, cleans up paths and users and archives to different extended media. Guardian also keeps an eye on any incoming audio you want him to, watches and copies those files into the CUTbase as an automatic background function.

CUTbase helps you automating these administration tasks with a flexible time-scheduler - freeing you to pursue other important duties.

Pre-Production
With a CUTplayer and the CUTbase Client the duty or assistant editor can audition newly recorded material, music, or archived material. He or she can choose the audio for, even set markers for the producer and assemble the next broadcast using easy Drag & Drop techniques.

Editing
CUTmaster, with the CUTmaster Board and CUTbase Client gives you the ideal editing environment. Fast, precise and intuitive - everyday editing is no longer the chore it once was. And the audio quality never degrades. All copies or reuses maintain the original quality with bit-precision. Quickly add additional clips and, voila - your production is immediately available to all CLAN connected stations.

Production
Whether you are creating jingles from music, sound effects and voice recordings, processing more room ambiance into a radio play, mastering music productions, or simply burning an audio CD - CUTmaster Pro with the CUTmaster Board and CUTbase Client support provides all the effects modules and production tools you need - all operating in Realtime.

Restoration
In addition to the existing features available in CUTmaster Pro to enhance and improve audio, you can also use the osiris Restoration Package to remove clicking, crackling and other surface noise from old, damaged or archived audio material. The new, dramatically improved audio can be made immediately available to all connected workstations, or stored in the central digital archive.

On-Air
By connecting a masterCART to the main console you can broadcast the previously assembled playlist, while archived, scheduled, and standby audio remains individually controlled using the console faders.

MasterCART controls up to three stereo channels. The audio is ‘pulled’ by the CUTbase Client and comes on air directly from the server. The integrated CARTwall features full HotKey support, and each wall-button can be assigned its own individual color.

The network
Audio networking stations need high standard and uninterrupted data transfer, so it is strongly recommended to have at minimum a 100 mBit connection. This can be in dependency to connected workstations Fast Ethernet, FDDI or ATM connection with Ethernet HUB or ATM-Switch. The Server runs on Windows NT, while Windows95/98 is recommended for workstation clients.
